Athletics at St. John’s

It has been an eventful and positive start of the year for the Athletic Department. One highlight of the past three months was the visit of Genazzano FCJ College from Melbourne, Australia. They stopped by the St. John’s campus for a day as part of a three-week tour of Europe. Genazzano is an all-girls school and our teams played games of soccer and volleyball with our fellow FCJ students from Australia. It was wonderful to welcome the girls to St. John’s and to strengthen our FCJ legacy.

Another great moment was hosting the Alistair Thorpe Memorial Cross Country Meet and catching up with Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe who travelled from Italy to attend the race.

After attending the Relay for Life event in Brussels at the end of August, we are proud to announce that the Athletic Department and its athletes will play a major role when St. John’s hosts this amazing event in June.

We would also like to introduce the new Assistant to the Athletic Director, Preben Gietz. After graduating from St. John’s, Preben went on to study in the US and play collegiate soccer. He has been a great addition to the Athletic Department.

This fall, we have not only enjoyed great moments outside of competition, but also on the courts, fields and trails. Our Varsity girls soccer team entered the history books by winning an ISST division 1 silver medal and our Junior Varsity boys soccer team completed an undefeated season. Our boys and girls high school volleyball teams both played good seasons and the Varsity teams both won fourth place at the ISST’s. The Varsity boys soccer team finished seventh at the ISST’s and, through their play, showed great promise for the future. The cross country team wrapped up a successful season by winning third and fourth place in the girls’ ISST race, Varsity and Junior Varsity, respectively. The Junior Varsity boys won sixth place, while the Varsity boys finished in ninth.

Congratulations to our middle school soccer and volleyball teams, who worked very hard throughout the season and displayed wonderful St. John’s spirit.

During the fall season, we had 216 student-athletes competing on our various teams. We would like to thank Deborah Brook, high school principal, and her entire staff, as well as Ben Kestner, middle school principal, and his entire staff, for their continued support throughout the season. The Lions Pride Rally was a huge success and served as an incredible send-off for our ISST teams. A big thank you also goes to our fall season coaches, whose tireless enthusiasm and commitment to our teams and athletes led to wonderful experiences shared by all.

One season ending always means that the next one is ready to kick off. An updated schedule for our basketball and swim teams, along with other information, can be found on the Athletic Department site on Also, please join the Athletic Department Facebook group on the St. John’s Facebook page for updated results, photos and news, Good luck to our basketball and swim teams.
