This Investigation ties in with our Sixth grade Unit on Space and Shape with a focus on Area. The students were on a Math trail, to different locations with ‘interesting doors’. Each door was measured and the area of glass versus solid wood carefully worked out.
The next step is to find out the approximate value of each door taking into account the price of reinforced glass and wood. Once they have the measurement, they have to work out the cost of each door, based on the price of wood/glass. The conclusion will be a discussion about the merits of having a combination of glass and wood in a door and the purpose of this in each location.
This challenge for Mrs. Briggs math class provides a creative way to learn about measuring and calculating and the students had a great time with the assignment.
