First Graders had a fantastic trip to an old working paper mill in Alsemberg. As part of our Unit, How The World Works, the children have been investigating and learning about materials, their properties, and uses. We took a trip to the paper mill, where the children not only saw how paper was made more than 100 years ago, but got to roll up their sleeves and make their own paper! They were most surprised to find out that paper has not always been made from trees. In the past they used fibers from old clothes to make the pulp.
The children the opportunity to dress up as factory workers from the past and even had a fun ride in a horse and carriage. Although the weather was a bit wet and cold the children still had an extraordinary day as can be seen from the smiles in the pictures.
