MYP Individuals and Societies Grades 7 and 8 students staged a Gallery Walk and Talk this past Friday along the Bridge and the corridor outside of MHS Music Room. They showed and talked about the results of an inquiry process. The Grade 7 inquiry topic was about the lives of explorers from the Unit “The Age of Exploration and Global Interconnections”. The names of explorers that Grade 7 students researched about are Columbus, Nansen, Anson, Armstrong, Earhart, Cartiers, Kingsley, Drake, Bingham, Cook, He, Ride, da Gama, Nunez de Balboa, Cavelier, Cousteau, Hedin, Amundsen, Vespucci, von Humboldt, Barth, Alvares Cabral, Tereshkova, and Bell.
The Grade 8 topic was about the human impact on land biomes and opportunities for and threats to Sustainable Development from the Unit “Natural Environments”. Grade 8 students used land biomes classification according to NASA or National Aeronautics and Space Administration, USA (see https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Experiments/Biome/): Tundra, Coniferous Forest, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Desert, Grassland, Rainforest, and Shrubland.
Both Grades 7 and 8 showed their inquiry results by way of poster displays of research information, source references, and layout presentation. Grades 5 and 6 students were their main audience. When some were asked randomly about what they appreciated, they said they liked the fact that the older students were prepared to talk about what they learned. The Gallery Walk and Talk was an opportunity for older students to teach the younger ones.
